Sergeant Major John S. Studer VMAQ-2 Sergeant Major

Sergeant Major Studer enlisted in the Marine Corps on November 10, 1997 and completed recruit training at MCRD San Diego, California. Upon completion of Marine Combat Training, Lance Corporal Studer was assigned to the Marine Detachment Fort Sill, OK as a student for the Marine Corps Cannon Crewman Course. After successful completion of the Marine Cannon Crewman Course in August 1998, was assigned the MOS 0811 Field Artillery Cannonier. 

In August 1998, reported to Battery L 3rd Battalion 10th Marines, where he served as a Cannonier, Section Chief, Platoon Sergeant, and Battery Gunnery Sergeant.

In February 1999, deployed with BLT 3/8 on the 24th MEU as a Squad Leader in support of Humanitarian Assistance missions in Albania and Provisional Rifle Company for peace keeping operations in Kosovo.

In March 2001 was promoted to the rank of Sergeant.  In March 2003, deployed with BLT 1/8 with the 26th MEU where he served as Section Chief for Howitzer Section 2 and Squad Leader in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Joint Task Force Liberia.

In July 2004, was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant.  In September 2004, deployed with 2nd Battalion 10th Marines to Camp Taqaddum, Iraq where he served as a Provisional Infantry Company Platoon Sergeant.

In August 2005 deployed with Lima Battery 3rd Battalion 10th Marines to Camp Blue Diamond, Iraq where he served as Guard Chief, Platoon Sergeant, Maintenance Officer, and Armory Officer.  In January 2006 was submitted for the combat meritorious promotion to Gunnery Sergeant.  In April 2006, was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant.

In February 2007, deployed with Lima Battery attached to 2nd Battalion 10th Marines to Camp Fallujah, Iraq where he served as Battery Gunnery Sergeant for a Provisional Infantry Company.

In January 2008, reported to Fort Sill, OK where he performed duties as instructor, Battery Gunnery Sergeant, Battery First Sergeant, SNCOIC for the Marine Corps Cannon Crewman Course and the Academic’s Chief for the Marine Corps Cannonier School.

In April 2010, was promoted to First Sergeant and received orders to 1st Radio Battalion where he assumed duty as Company First Sergeant, deploying to Afghanistan as the Company First Sergeant and Linguist Manager in support of Operation Enduring Freedom 12.2. 

In March 2014, received orders to 3d Maintenance Battalion, Okinawa, Japan where he served as the H&S Company First Sergeant and subsequently as the Battalion Sergeant Major.

In March 2016, was promoted to his current rank and received orders to VMAQ-2 where he is currently serving as the Squadron Sergeant Major.

Sergeant Major Studer’s personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (with 2 gold stars in lieu of 3rd award), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (valor and 2 gold stars in lieu of 3rd award), Combat Action Ribbon (gold star in lieu of 2nd award)
