VMU-2 Sergeant Major
Sergeant Major Duane E. Smotherman

SgtMaj Smotherman reported to MCRD San Diego on 13 May 1998. Upon graduation, Private Smotherman was meritoriously promoted to Private First Class and reported to Ft. Leonard Wood, MO to be trained as a heavy equipment operator.  Upon graduation, he received orders and reported to MWSS 171, Iwakuni, Japan in November 1998.  While serving in Japan PFC Smotherman was meritoriously promoted to the ranks of Lance Corporal and Corporal.

In December 1999 Corporal Smotherman reported to Marine Corps Security Force Training Company for Basic Security Guard (BSG) training. Upon graduation Corporal Smotherman received orders and reported to Marine Barracks, Marine Corps Security Forces Company Naples, Italy in February 2000.  Corporal Smotherman served as the Corporal of the Guard until his promotion to Sergeant in February 2002.
Sergeant Smotherman reentered active service in August 2004 with a lateral move to MOS of 0311 and reported to MCAGCC Twenty-nine Palms for duty with 3d Battalion 4th Marines, Lima Company.  While serving as squad leader Sergeant Smotherman conducted two tours to Operation IRAQI FREEDOM with V34 from January to August 2005 and September 2006 to May 2007 where he was Combat Meritoriously promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant in May 2007.

In October 2007 Staff Sergeant Smotherman received orders and reported to 3d Fleet Anti-terrorism Security Team (FAST) Company, Norfolk, VA and deployed to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba from November 2007 to February 2008.  Additionally Staff Sergeant Smotherman conducted a UDP to Yokosuka, Japan from November 2008 to August 2009.  In October 2009 he reported to Marine Corps Security Force Regiment Training Company to train Basic Security Guard students to serve in the security forces.

Staff Sergeant Smotherman was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant and received orders to report to Headquarters Company 6th Marine Regiment where he served as Training Chief and Assistant Operations Chief during the Regimental Combat Team’s deployment to Operation ENDURING FREEDOM from December 2011 to November 2012. In 2014 he was promoted to the rank of First Sergeant and reported to 2d Maintenance Battalion, 2d MLG, Camp Lejeune, NC.

First Sergeant Smotherman served as the Company First Sergeant for Motor Transport and Electronic Maintenance Companies from March 2014 to October 2015, and received orders to Camp Mujuk, ROK, Marine Corps Installation Pacific to serve as the Senior Enlisted Advisor.  After completion of orders First Sergeant Smotherman reported to 2d Battalion, 2d Marines where he deployed to Sigonella, Italy from August 2017 to February 2018, and a UDP to Okinawa Japan in August 2019 to February 2020.  He was promoted to his current rank of Sergeant Major and was assigned to his current post with VMU 2, MAG 14.

Sergeant Major Smotherman’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, three Navy and Marine Corps Commendation medals, three Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals with combat distinguishing device and the Combat Action ribbon.
