Lieutenant Colonel Greer C. Chambless VMA-542 Executive Officer
Lieutenant Colonel Greer C. Chambless graduated from Washington and Lee University in 1999 and then commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Marine Corps in 2000. After completing The Basic School in Quantico, VA in 2001, 2nd Lieutenant Chambless reported to Pensacola, FL for flight training. He earned his Naval Aviator wings in 2003 and then completed AV-8B training in Cherry Point, NC in 2005.

1st Lieutenant Chambless reported to Yuma, AZ where he joined Marine Attack Squadron 211. While with VMA-211, Captain Chambless deployed to Al Asad, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2006 to 2007. Captain Chambless deployed again from VMA-211 aboard the USS Tarawa in support of the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit from 2007 to 2008.

Following his first fleet tour with VMA-211, Captain Chambless attended Tactical Air Control Party Course in Coronado, CA before joining 5th Air and Naval Gun Liaison Company in Okinawa, Japan. While with 5th ANGLICO, Captain Chambless deployed to Habbaniyah and Al Taqaddam, Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2008-2009.

In 2009, Captain Chambless returned to Yuma, AZ and joined VMA-211 for his second fleet Harrier Tour. While with VMA-211, Major Chambless deployed on the USS Boxer in support of the 13th MEU in 2011. In 2012, Major Chambless deployed with VMA-211 to Kandahar and Camp Bastion, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Following selection on the Commandant’s Professional Intermediate-Level Education Board, Major Chambless attended language training at the State Department’s Foreign Service Institute from 2013 to 2014. After language training, Major Chambless attended the Norwegian Staff College and then continued to support the Norwegian Army as an exchange officer working at the Norwegian Army Military Academy and the Norwegian Army Weapons School.

Major Chambless joined MAG-14 in Cherry Point, NC in 2016 and promptly deployed to the Combined Air Operations Center in the Central Command Area of Operations. After AV-8B refresh training from 2016 to 2017, Major Chambless checked-in to Marine Attack Squadron 542 to become a 542 Tiger.

Lieutenant Colonel Chambless has accumulated over 1700 AV-8B hours and over 2000 total flight hours. He held the following squadron billets: Airframes OIC, S-4 Officer, Operations Schedule Writer, Aviation Safety Officer, Department of Standardization and Safety Officer, Aircraft Maintenance Officer, and Executive Officer. Lieutenant Colonel Chambless also earned the flight qualifications of Section Lead, Division Lead, Weapons and Tactics Officer, Mission Commander, Night Systems Instructor, Low Altitude Tactics Instructor, and Advanced Landing Signals Officer.

LtCol Chambless’s personal decorations include the Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal (Strike/Flight numeral 10), Navy Commendation Medal, and two Naval Achievement Medals (one with V).
