MWSS-271 Sergeant Major
Sergeant Major Joseph D. Richardson

SgtMaj Richardson currently serves as the Squadron SgtMaj for Marine Wing Support Squadron-271, Marine Air Group 14, 2d Marine Air Wing, Cherry Point North Carolina.

SgtMaj Richardson enlisted in the Marine Corps in June of 2003 and attended Recruit Training at Parris Island South Carolina. Private Richardson attended Marine Corps School of Infantry (SOI) West at Camp Pendleton, CA where he earned the Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) of 0311 Infantry Rifleman. After graduation, Pvt Richardson completed his training as an 0313 Light Armored Vehicle (LAV) Crewmen at SOI West and was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Private First Class (PFC) in February 2004.

PFC Richardson was assigned to the 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance (1st LAR) Battalion in March of 2004 and immediately deployed with Alpha Company in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) II. PFC Richardson was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal during the deployment and returned from Iraq in October of 2004. Alpha Company was set for re-deployment to Iraq in late 2005. Prior to deployment LCpl Richardson was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Corporal.  Cpl Richardson returned from Iraq in March 2006.

In June 2006, Cpl Richardson attended the Combat Marksmanship Instructor Trainer course at 29 Palms California where he earned the MOS of 8531. In September of 2006 Cpl Richardson was promoted to the rank of Sergeant.

In March of 2007 Sgt Richardson reported to Drill Instructor School Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) Parris Island, and was subsequently assigned to Company B 1st Recruit Training Battalion (RTBN) in June of 2007. Sgt Richardson completed 5 cycles as a Drill Instructor and Senior Drill Instructor before he was assigned to Support Battalion as the Evaluation Holding Platoon (EHP) Senior Drill Instructor. While at EHP Sgt Richardson was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant. SSgt Richardson was re-assigned to Co B and completed two additional cycles as the Follow Series Gunnery Sergeant. In July 2010 SSgt Richardson executed orders to 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion (2D LAR).

SSgt Richardson was assigned to Echo Co 2D LAR and deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) in March 2011 and returned from Afghanistan in November of 2011.  In March 2012 SSgt Richardson attended Infantry Unit Leaders Course and was selected for the rank of Gunnery Sergeant in June of 2012.  SSgt Richardson graduated from IULC in June 2012 and served as the Platoon Sergeant for the Security Platoon until January of 2013.

In February of 2014 GySgt Richardson deployed with Battalion Landing Team (BLT) 1/6 on the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) and returned in October of 2014. In February of 2015, GySgt Richardson received orders to the Staff Non-Commissioned Officer Academy (SNCOA) in Okinawa Japan. There, he served as Faculty Advisor and Chief Faculty Advisor of Advanced Course and Sergeants Course. GySgt Richardson was selected to the rank of 1stSgt in December of 2016 and received orders to Site Support, North Versailles PA, Kilo Co. 3/25 to serve as the Inspector-Instructor 1stSgt. In July of 2020, 1stSgt Richardson assumed the duties of Company 1stSgt for Truck Company, Headquarters Battalion (HqBn), 2D MARDIV. SgtMaj Richardson was selected to his current rank in November of 2020 and assumed the duties of Squadron SgtMaj for MWSS-271 in July of 2021.  

SgtMaj Richardson’s personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Naval Commendation Medal with 2 Gold Stars, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with 1 Gold Star, the Combat Action Ribbon and the Drill Instructor Service Ribbon.
