Lieutenant Colonel Mitchell, a native of Wisconsin, enlisted in 1997 and served with Company G, 2d Battalion, 24th Marines until May 2000 when he graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice and minor in Political Science. At the completion of his degree and Officer Candidates School, he commissioned in May 2000 and reported to The Basic School (TBS) in Quantico, Virginia. Upon completion of TBS, he reported to the Marine Corps Engineer School in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
Upon completion of the Marine Corps Engineer School, Second Lieutenant Mitchell received orders to the 3d Force Service Support Group for tour with 9th Engineer Support Battalion (ESB) in Camp Hansen, Okinawa. From 2001 to 2002 he served as a Platoon Commander, Company A, 9th ESB and conducted training exercises in Korea and Thailand. In 2002, he reported to Marine Wing Support Squadron 371 (MWSS-371) for duty. While assigned to MWSS-371, he served as the Training Officer, S-3 Alpha, and a Forward Arming and Refueling Point Officer-in-Charge (OIC) during Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) in 2003. Following OIF and his assignment as the construction shop Platoon Commander, he became the Security Company OIC responsible for Explosive Ordnance Disposal escort between Ramadi and Fallujah during OIF-3 in 2005. While assigned to the MWSS-371, he also participated in two Joint Task Force -6 missions along the Southern US Border in Columbus, New Mexico and Naco, Arizona.
From 2005 to 2008, Captain Mitchell served as the Inspector-Instructor, Company B, 6th Engineer Support Battalion, 4th Marine Logistics Group in Green Bay, Wisconsin. While assigned as the I-I, Captain Mitchell served as the Company Commander for Company B and participated in the first Bulk Fuel training exercise with Colombian Marines in Tumaco, Colombia. From August 2008 to May 2009, Captain Mitchell attended the Expeditionary Warfare School (EWS) in Quantico, VA. Upon completion of EWS, he reported to the Officers Candidate School for instructor duty until July 2009.
Reassigned in August 2009, Captain Mitchell served as the Commanding Officer of Company B, 1st Combat Engineer Battalion (CEB) and deployed to Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) 10.1 in Afghanistan as part of Regimental Combat Team-2. Promoted to Major in October 2010, he then transitioned as the Executive Officer in April of 2011 and subsequent deployment to Afghanistan for OEF 12.1.
In July 2013, Major Mitchell received orders to Marine Corps Forces, Pacific, Camp Smith, Hawaii where he served as the Aide-de-Camp for the Deputy Commander, USPACOM, a Logistics and Engineer Planner to the AC/S G-4, and the Staff Secretary until his subsequent selection and assignment to the Army Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, KS. In July 2017 he was assigned as the Regional Facilities Officer, AC/S G-F, Marine Corps Installations West-Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. He was promoted to his present rank on 1 September 2017.
His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal with two gold stars in lieu of third award, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with “V” and three gold stars in lieu of fourth award, the Joint Service Achievement Award, and the Combat Action Ribbon.
