Master Gunnery Sergeant Steen enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserve in October 1995. In January 1996 he attended recruit training in Parris Island, South Carolina. Upon completion of recruit training he was transferred to Camp Geiger, North Carolina for Marine Combat Training. Private First Class Steen was then transferred to Camp Johnson, North Carolina for training as a Supply Administration Clerk, MOS 3043.
Private First Class Steen then reported to D Company, 4th Combat Engineer Battalion, in Knoxville, Tennessee. He was promoted to Lance Corporal in October 1996. In August 1998 Lance Corporal Steen augmented to regular Active duty, and received orders to Pensacola, Florida where he attended “A” school for the Power plants course, specializing in turboprops. In October 1998 he proceeded to Cherry Point, North Carolina for training as a KC-130 Power plants Mechanic, MOS 6216. While there he was promoted to Corporal in December 1998. Upon graduating in February 1999, Corporal Steen was assigned as permanent personnel to the KC-130 training squadron, VMGRT-253.
Corporal Steen attended Corporal’s Course at Cherry Point in November 1999, and was meritoriously promoted to Sergeant in February 2000. In October 2000 he had requested and accepted one-year unaccompanied orders to VMGR-152 in Okinawa, Japan where he was a Collateral Duty Inspector and night crew desk sergeant in Powerline.
Sergeant Steen reported to VMGR-234 in Fort Worth Texas, in November 2001. There he became a Quality Assurance Collateral Duty Inspector. He completed the KC-130 Flight Mechanic syllabus in August 2002, and deployed to Bahrain and Kuwait in February 2003 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom I. From June 2003 to December 2003, he was redeployed from Bahrain back to Okinawa with VMGR-234, serving as Detachment Powerline QA/Flight Mechanic.
Sergeant Steen was promoted to Staff Sergeant in October 2004. He attended the Staff Noncommissioned Officer Academy Career Course in Quantico in March 2005 and graduated in April 2005.
Staff Sergeant Steen completed KC-130 Flight Engineer training in August 2007, earning the MOS 6276/6242. He was promoted to Gunnery Sergeant in August 2009, and PCS’d to VMGR-452, in Newburgh, NY, in January 2010. While in VMGR-452, he served in multiple billets, including Powerline Division Chief, Aircrew Division Chief, Maintenance Controller, Flight Engineer Assistant NATOPS Instructor and Flight Engineer NATOPS Evaluator. He deployed to NAS Sigonella, Italy from Sep 2011 to May 2012 as acting Maintenance Chief/ senior Flight Engineer, to support operations in Lybia, and SPMAGTF-CR-AF. He was promoted to Master Sergeant in June 2015, and PCS’d to VMGR-352 in Miramar, CA in August 2015.
Master Sergeant Steen went through KC-130 J Crew Master conversion training after arriving in Miramar. He attended the 1stSgt/MSgt Regional Seminar in Camp Pendleton, CA in August 2016, and deployed in October 2016, to Ahmed Al Jaber AB, Kuwait in support of SPMAGTF-CR-CC, and Operation Inherent Resolve as the VMGR-352, Detachment Alpha Senior Enlisted Leader/senior Crew Master. He was selected for promotion to Master Gunnery Sergeant in November 2017, and was frocked to his current rank in August 2018. He PCS’d to VMGR-152, Iwakuni, Japan in Sept 2018.
Master Gunnery Sergeant Steen served as the VMGR-152 Enlisted Aircrew Chief from October 2018 to September 2019. In September 2019 he left Japan, and PCS’d to VMGR-252, Cherry Point, NC in October 2019, where he served as the VMGR-252 Enlisted Aircrew Chief. 1 April 2021 he PCA’d to the KC-130J Fleet Replacement Detachment, Cherry Point, NC to serve as the Senior Enlisted Advisor and MOS 6276 Progression Manager.
His personal awards include the Air Medal, the Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal with 2 gold stars and the Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal with 3 gold stars.
