Sergeant Major James I. Petty VMGR-252 Sergeant Major

Sergeant Major Petty enlisted in the Marine Corps on January 2000, and attended recruit training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California. In April 2000, he reported to the School of Infantry (SOI) at Camp Pendleton, California where he received the primary MOS of 0311, Rifleman.  

In June 2000, Private Petty reported to First Battalion, Fifth Marines where he served as a Rifleman and was promoted to PFC. In August 2000, PFC Petty was transferred to 2d Battalion, 1st Marines where he served in a variety of billets from Rifleman to Squad Leader.  During his time in Second Battalion, First Marines, PFC Petty was promoted to Lance Corporal and Corporal and deployed two times with the 13th MEU and the 15th MEU in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Following his second deployment with 2d Battalion, 1st Marines, he received orders to the Marine Corps Combat Instructor Course, Camp Pendleton, California.

While attending the Marine Corps Combat Instructor Course, he was promoted to Sergeant. Upon completion of the course on March 14, 2004, he was assigned to Hotel Company, Marine Combat Training Battalion. Sergeant Petty served as a Combat/Squad Instructor for 10 training cycles and a Platoon Commander for six training cycles with Hotel Company. In October 2005, Sergeant Petty was transferred to Headquarters Company, Marine Combat Training Battalion where he served as a Primary Instructor for Weapons and Tactics where he was meritoriously promoted to Staff Sergeant.

In May 2007, Staff Sergeant Petty reported to First Battalion, Seventh Marines, Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, California where he served as the Platoon Sergeant for Third Platoon, Alpha Company.  In August of 2007, Staff Sergeant Petty deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and returned in March 2008. Staff Sergeant Petty continued as the Platoon Sergeant for 3d Platoon and deployed again in February of 2009 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom where he was combat meritoriously promoted to Gunnery Sergeant.

In January 2010, Gunnery Sergeant Petty received orders to the Staff Non-Commissioned Officer Academy, Sergeant’s Course, Twentynine Palms, California for duty as Faculty Advisor/Instructor and would eventually serve as the Staff Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge of Sergeants Course. 

In January 2013, Gunnery Sergeant Petty received orders to 3d Battalion, 7th Marines and served as the Company Gunnery Sergeant for Lima Company. In September 2013, Gunnery Sergeant Petty deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and returned in December 2013 and was selected to the rank of First Sergeant.

In January 2014, First Sergeant Petty received orders to 1st Tank Battalion to serve as a Company First Sergeant. First Sergeant Petty served as a Company First Sergeant for Company B, Company A, and Headquarters and Service Company.

In February 2017, First Sergeant Petty received orders to 2d Low Altitude Air Defense Battalion, Marine Air Control Group 28, 2d Marine Air Wing, Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina to serve as a Battery First Sergeant. He served as the Battery First Sergeant for Battery A and Headquarters and Service Battery where he was promoted to the current rank of Sergeant Major.

In January 2019, Sergeant Major Petty reported to VMGR-252, Marine Aircraft Group 14, 2d Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina and currently serves as the Squadron Sergeant Major.

Sergeant Major Petty’s personal decorations include the Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal and three gold stars, the Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal and two gold stars, and the Combat Action Ribbon.
