Lieutenant Colonel Smith attended Marine Corps Boot Camp during the summer of 1993 and spent four years in the Marine Corps Reserve while attending the University of Washington where he received a B.S. degree in Physics. Lieutenant Colonel Smith was commissioned in June of 1997.
After graduation from The Basic School (TBS) in March of 1998, 2nd Lieutenant Smith attended flight school, flying the T-34C aircraft in Training Squadron Two (VT-2) in Pensacola, FL followed by flying both the T-2C and T-45C aircraft in Training Squadrons Nine and Seven (VT-9 and VT-7) located in Meridian, MS. First Lieutenant Smith then reported to Marine Attack Training Squadron-203 (VMAT-203) for initial AV-8B training which he completed in September of 2001.
Captain Smith reported to his first fleet unit, Marine Attack Squadron 513 (VMA-513) in October of 2001. While attached to VMA-513 he served as Schedules Officer, Aviation Safety Officer, Quality Assurance Officer, and Pilot Training Officer from 2001 until 2004. He deployed aboard the USS Belleau Wood in support of the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) in 2002 and again on the USS Pelelieu in support of the 13th MEU in late 2003/early 2004.
In 2005 Captain Smith completed both the Tactical Air Control Party School and the Air Officer Course, to serve as the Air Officer for 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines for their deployment to Al Anbar Province in supporting of Regimental Combat Team in Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2005 and 2006.
Upon completion of his Air Officer tour in March of 2006, Captain Smith reported to Training Squadron 21 (VT-21) in Kingsville, TX to serve as flight instructor, Assistant Operations Officer, and Weapons Detachment Coordinator from until the fall of 2008. Upon his promotion to Major, now Major Smith was assigned as the Training Wing Two (TW-2) Senior Marine.
Major Smith returned to VMA-513 in October of 2009 and served as the Director of Safety and Standardization and Maintenance Officer while deploying aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard in support of the 11th MEU. Upon his return from that deployment, Major Smith became the Executive Officer of VMA-211 and 13th MEU Boat Detachment Officer in Charge for a deployment aboard the USS Boxer in 2011.
Upon return from the deployment, Major Smith was selected for the Marine Corps Command and Staff College, where he received his Master’s Degree in Military Studies in 2012.
Major Smith reported to OPNAV N98 in the Pentagon to serve as the AV-8B Resource Sponsor while also supporting Headquarter Marine Corps, Aviation as the AV-8B Requirements Officer. Here, Major Smith participated in the Harrier Independent Readiness Review and advocated for future warfighting upgrades to the AV-8B aircraft. In December of 2013, he was promoted to his present rank. LtCol Smith reported to MAG-14 in June of 2016 to serve as the MAG-14 Current Readiness Officer.
LtCol Smith has accumulated over 1000 hours in both the T-45 and AV-8B aircraft. His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with gold star, Strike/Flight Air Medal with numeral two, Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal with two gold stars, and the Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal with two gold stars.
