Sergeant Major Michael L. Bolyard VMGR-252 Sergeant Major

Sergeant Major Bolyard graduated from Frederick High School, Frederick Maryland in 1983 and enlisted in the Marine Corps on 18 October 1993. He underwent recruit training at MCRD Paris Island, South Carolina, in which he was meritoriously promoted to Private First Class upon graduation.

Sergeant Major Bolyard reported to the School of Infantry for MOS training in April 1994. He graduated as Company honor graduate and was promoted meritoriously to the rank of Lance Corporal. 

Sergeant Major Bolyard served with Golf Company, 2nd Battalion 4th Marines, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, California where he was assigned as a rifleman, team leader, squad leader, Platoon Sergeant, Company Gunnery Sergeant from April 1994 to September 2001.

Sergeant Major Bolyard deployed with the 31st MEU to Okinawa, Japan for jungle training and a CARROT Cruise for 6 months. After returning from deployment in August 1995, he was assigned to the Fleet Assistance Program where he served as a Military Police Officer with MCB, Camp Pendleton, California for 7 months. After returning from FAP, he deployed three more times with the 31st MEU in which he was promoted to the rank of Corporal and Sergeant with this command. Sergeant Major Bolyard was also the recipient of the Sergeant Major Malnar award for outstanding leadership for the Battalion in Jun 98.

Sergeant Major Bolyard reported to Drill Instructor School, serving in Kilo Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion (“K” Co, 3rd RTBN) as a junior Drill Instructor and Senior Drill Instructor October 2001 to January 2004.

Sergeant Major Bolyard reported to 2nd Battalion 4th Marines 5th Marine Regiment, where he was assigned as a Platoon Sergeant and Company Gunnery Sergeant in Golf Company from February 2004 to November 2007. After 2 successful deployments with the 31th MEU, Sergeant Major Bolyard was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant and deployed with the 15th MEU in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as the Company Gunnery Sergeant for Golf Company.

Sergeant Major Bolyard reported to Headquarters and Support Battalion, Headquarters and Service Company, Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton, California where he served as the Division SNCOIC for the Training Support Division from November 2007 to February 2009.

In March of 2009, Sergeant Major Bolyard reported to Inspector Instructor Staff Marine Corps Training Center, Concord, California as the Inspector-Instructor First Sergeant.

Sergeant Major Bolyard reported to 1st Reconnaissance Battalion June 2012, and was assigned as the Headquarters and Service Company First Sergeant.

Sergeant Major Bolyard was promoted to his current rank in February 2014, and was assigned as the Battalion Sergeant Major for 2d Battalion, 4th Marines, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. In November of 2014, Sergeant Major Bolyard successfully deployed with the battalion on the 31st MEU and returned May of 2015.

In December 2015, Sergeant Major Bolyard reported to MCAS, 2D MAW, VMGR-252, Cherry Point, North Carolina and is currently serving as the Squadron Sergeant Major.         

Sergeant Major Bolyard’s personal decorations include the Purple Heart Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with one gold star, Navy Commendation Medal with Combat V device with one gold star, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement medal with three Gold stars and the Combat Action Ribbon.
