Sergeant Major Borders enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on 15 November, 1994 and reported to Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina. Upon completion of recruit training he was assigned to Company F, Marine Combat Training Battalion, School of Infantry-East, Camp Geiger, North Carolina and was meritoriously promoted to Private First Class upon graduation.|

Private First Class Borders was assigned to Food Service Subsistence Supply Course, Camp Johnson, North Carolina. After obtaining the Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) 3361 he was assigned to Camp Geiger, North Carolina as a subsistence clerk.

Lance Corporal Borders received orders to Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan. Shortly after arriving, he was promoted to Corporal and assigned as a Subsistence Chief. In May 1998, Corporal Borders was promoted to Sergeant.

In 1999, Sergeant Borders received orders to Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina, First Recruit Training Battalion, as a Subsistence Chief and Chief Cook from December until March 2001. Sergeant Borders then received orders to report to Drill Instructor school in April 2001. Upon graduating Drill Instructor School, he was assigned to India Company, Third Recruit Training Battalion. He served as a Drill Instructor for three platoons and was transferred to Weapons Field Training Battalion where he held numerous billets. Staff Sergeant Borders returned to recruit training Regiment where he served as a Senior Drill Instructor for four cycles.

In June 2004, Staff Sergeant Borders received orders to Marine Corps Base Okinawa, Japan. During this assignment he held numerous billets including Subsistence Chief and Chief Cook. Staff Sergeant Borders also served as the Company Gunnery Sergeant for Headquarters and Service Battalion in Alpha Company.

Staff Sergeant Borders was transferred to Marine Wing Support Squadron 172 where he served as the Assistant Field Mess Manager. During this assignment, he deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom as the S-4 Chief and substance abuse control officer. While deployed, he was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant. Upon completion of the deployment, he returned to Headquarters and Service Battalion Marine Corps Base where he acted as the First Sergeant for Bravo Company.

Gunnery Sergeant Borders was then selected for Assistant Marine Officer Instructor duty. During this tour he was selected to the rank of First Sergeant. He received orders to 2nd Marine Logistics Group, Combat Logistic Regiment 27, Combat Logistics Battalion 6, where he deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom as the Support Company and Headquarters First Sergeant.  Upon completion of this tour, First Sergeant Borders was assigned to the Ground Combat Element Integration Task Force, 2nd Marine Division. Upon completion of this tour, he was assigned to duty at School of Infantry-East, Infantry Training Battalion.

Sergeant Major Borders was promoted to his current rank in July 2017. He is currently assigned as the Sergeant Major for the Hawks of Marine Attack Training Squadron 203.

Sergeant Major Borders’ personnel decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (6th award), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2nd Award), Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal (7th award).
